Carbon fibre strengthening enabling major mid-construction design changes without steel beams, demolition, or delays
Carbon fibre strengthening enabling major mid-construction design changes without steel beams, demolition, or delays
During construction, the developer approved a ~40% increase in unit yield and the addition of a large communal pool and amenities zone at ground level. These changes introduced significant new structural loads not included in the original design, particularly at slab, beam, and column–slab connection zones. The project structural engineer required a strengthening system capable of delivering high stiffness and load capacity within very limited head-height clearances. Conventional steel strengthening was ruled out due to clearance, constructability, and aesthetic limitations.
TRD Remedial proposed, engineered, supplied, and installed a bespoke Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening system tailored to the revised load demands. The scope included strengthening of suspended slabs, carbon fibre reinforcement to beams, and localised strengthening of drop panels at column–slab connections. Carbon fibre was selected due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, minimal impact on head height, rapid installation timeframe, and compatibility with fire-rated and architectural finishes.
From concept to completion, the entire carbon fibre strengthening scope was delivered in approximately two weeks. The solution required minimal surface preparation, caused no disruption to parallel trades, had no impact to the overall construction program, and eliminated the need for steel fabrication or heavy lifting. The carbon fibre strengthening works enabled the developer to increase residential unit numbers, add a pool and communal amenities area, achieve full structural compliance, avoid steel strengthening systems, and maintain architectural intent and clearance requirements.
